Our class

In class 2 we are a mixed aged class comprising of boys and girls in years one and two. In our classroom you will see us learning in lots of different ways.  We learn by listening, looking, doing, explaining and practicing. We know that we all have an important role in our classroom and love to share our ideas and show off our wonderful work to our friends. We often work and play alongside the younger children in class 1 and know how important it is for us to help them when we can and be a good role model.

Our Teacher

Our Teacher is Miss Chapman. She has worked at our school for nearly two years and just loves it here! We think it’s because Tebay has such wonderful children and grownups – but it might also have something to do with the view from our classroom window. Before she came to us she worked in schools in Carlisle for a very long time. She is originally from Sunderland – so says some of her words a bit funny – but that’s okay because it helps us with our spelling.

Our Learning – Spring

History – We are learning about the Great Fire of London. As Historians we are exploring different artefacts to learn what they can tell us about how the fire started and spread.

Geography – We are learning about our capital city London. As Geographers we are learning about the capital cities of the UK. We will be able to identify human and natural geographical features in London.

Reading – In our whole class reading this term we are learning about two wonderful authors- Judith Kerr and Michael Rosen. We will study and talk about some of their books in detail, using their stories as an inspiration for our own writing. We will learn about the authors and how their life experiences influenced their writing. We will also practice our reading skills in small groups during guided reading, where some of us will be practicing our decoding skills as we work towards becoming independent readers. We will all talk about what we have read and answer questions about new words or phrases that we find in books. We will all be encouraged to develop the confidence, skills and love of books which will lead to us being life long readers. We will also read at least twice a week (more for early readers) individually with our teacher. We try to complete our reading challenge by reading regularly at home.

Phonics/ spelling – We have a daily focused phonics or spelling session. Our spelling program incorporates the NC requirements of both year 1 and 2- and the content is taught separately. The delivery of the program builds systematically on skills and knowledge needed. We also have separate sessions which focus on the tricky year 1 and 2 spellings – we call these red words.

Science – In science we are learning about Materials and their properties. We will be able to identify different types of materials and conduct some simple investigations to find out more about their properties and what makes them suitable to make different objects.

Helping at home – Our family members all did a fantastic job at supporting and encouraging us with our home learning during lockdown. A big thank you to them all! We got into good habits ? To encourage this to continue we will all try to complete a daily short, simple task at home. We have to try to do this task on our own. If we find it tricky we bring it back to school the next day and Miss Chapman will help us to complete it.
