British Values

At Tebay Primary School, we are committed to nurturing children who understand and embody the fundamental values that underpin life in modern Britain. Our approach helps pupils develop respect, tolerance, and a strong sense of community.

We explore British Values through weekly Picture News assemblies and by watching “A Day in the Life of BBC” videos, which provide real-world examples of different careers and perspectives, sparking discussion and reflection. These activities encourage pupils to think critically, share opinions respectfully, and understand diverse viewpoints.

Our focus areas include:

  • Democracy
Pupils learn the importance of having a voice, participating in decision-making, and respecting others’ opinions. This includes voting for our school council, choosing class representatives, and contributing to class discussions. Picture News assemblies also provide examples of democracy in action around the world.

  • The Rule of Law
Children explore why rules exist, both in school and society, and how they protect everyone. Picture News assemblies and videos often highlight real-world examples of laws and fairness, encouraging pupils to consider the consequences of actions.

  • Individual Liberty
We help pupils understand their rights and responsibilities, encouraging them to make safe, informed choices. Picture News stories and BBC videos inspire children to think about freedom, self-expression, and personal responsibility.

  • Mutual Respect
Respect for others is at the heart of our ethos. Pupils learn to listen to different viewpoints, appreciate diversity, and treat everyone with kindness. Assemblies and videos provide opportunities to discuss current events where respect and understanding are key.

  • Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
Pupils explore and celebrate the diversity of our community and the wider world. Through Picture News and BBC videos, children are introduced to different cultures, beliefs, and perspectives, fostering empathy and open-mindedness.

By weaving Picture News assemblies, BBC “Day in the Life” videos, and practical activities like school council voting into our teaching of British Values, we ensure pupils not only learn about these principles but see them in action in the world around them.
