French Curriculum Overview for parents and carers

🇫🇷 French Curriculum at Tebay Primary School

At Tebay Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language opens doors to other cultures and broadens pupils’ horizons. Our French curriculum, based on the Kapow Primary scheme, develops pupils’ confidence in communication, understanding of language structure, and appreciation of French-speaking cultures.

📚 Our Curriculum Structure

French is taught as part of our Key Stage 2 provision:

  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)

Children begin formal language learning in KS2, following a progressive and engaging programme that builds year on year.

🧠 Implementation: How We Teach French

Our French lessons are interactive and immersive:

  1. 🔁 Recap & Revisit – Revisiting familiar words and phrases to strengthen recall.
  2. 🗣️ New Vocabulary & Grammar – Introducing new language through songs, stories, and games.
  3. 💬 Speaking & Listening – Engaging in conversations and role-play to build fluency.
  4. ✍️ Reading & Writing – Applying knowledge in written form with increasing accuracy.
  5. Knowledge Stamp – Reinforcing key learning through reflection or mini-assessments.

🎯 Impact: What Our Pupils Gain

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will:

  • Communicate confidently in simple French.
  • Understand and use basic grammar structures.
  • Appreciate French culture and its global influence.
  • Be prepared for further language learning at secondary school.

🐣 French in EYFS and Key Stage 1

While formal French lessons begin in KS2, children in EYFS and KS1 experience early exposure to other languages through songs, greetings, and stories, fostering curiosity and cultural awareness from an early age.

The aim of our curriculum is to ensure that children enter Key Stage 3 with the ability to speak, read, write and aurally understand French independently and with confidence. Children will then be able to apply their experience of learning a language to the acquisition of other languages in the next stage of their education.
