🧰 Design & Technology Curriculum at Tebay Primary School

At Tebay Primary School, we aim to inspire pupils to think creatively and practically to design, make, and evaluate purposeful products. Using the Kapow Primary scheme, our Design & Technology curriculum equips children with the technical knowledge, creativity, and confidence to solve problems in real-life contexts.

📚 Our Curriculum Structure

Design & Technology is taught across:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
  • Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)

The curriculum is carefully planned to ensure a clear progression of knowledge, skills, and vocabulary from one key stage to the next.

🧠 Implementation: How We Teach Design & Technology

Each project or unit follows a design, make, and evaluate cycle:

  1. 💡 Design Brief & Research – Exploring the purpose of the product and gathering ideas.
  2. ✏️ Planning & Designing – Creating designs and prototypes using drawings and models.
  3. 🧵 Making – Using tools, materials, and components safely and effectively.
  4. 🔍 Evaluating – Testing, reviewing, and improving their creations.
  5. Knowledge Stamp – Reflecting on learning and outcomes.

🎯 Impact: What Our Pupils Gain

By the end of each key stage, pupils will:

  • Understand the full design process from idea to product.
  • Have developed practical making skills and technical understanding.
  • Demonstrate resilience and problem-solving abilities.
  • Appreciate how design and innovation impact daily life.

🐣 D&T in the Early Years (EYFS)

In EYFS, Design & Technology is introduced through Expressive Arts and Design and Understanding the World. Children use a range of materials and construction kits to explore how things are made, laying the groundwork for Key Stage 1 learning.

Design & Technology is taught half termly, alternating with Art & Design.
