🏅 Physical Education (P.E.) Curriculum at Tebay Primary School

At Tebay Primary School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality Physical Education (P.E.) curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in sport and physical activity. Through the Cambridgeshire Scheme of Work and expert teaching from specialist coaches within the Eden Valley Sports Partnership, our pupils develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork, and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

📚 Our Curriculum Structure

Physical Education is taught throughout the school, across the following key stages:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
  • Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)

Lessons are carefully sequenced using the Cambridgeshire Scheme, ensuring progressive development in agility, balance, coordination, and tactical understanding. Each year, pupils build upon prior learning to develop control, confidence, and competence in a wide range of sports and activities.

🧠 Implementation: How We Teach P.E.

Our approach combines high-quality curriculum planning with expert delivery:

  1. 🧍‍♂️ Warm Up & Skill Focus – Lessons begin with purposeful warm-up activities and a focus on developing key movement or sport-specific skills.
  2. Skill Practice & Application – Children practise and apply skills through fun, structured drills and team games.
  3. 🧩 Game Play & Strategy – Pupils use tactics, communication, and collaboration to play small-sided and competitive games.
  4. 💬 Reflection & Evaluation – Opportunities are provided to discuss performance, sportsmanship, and how to improve.
  5. Knowledge Stamp – Sessions conclude with reflection or feedback to consolidate learning and celebrate achievements.

Specialist coaches from the Eden Valley Sports Partnership work alongside teachers to enhance pupils’ experiences and ensure high-quality teaching and learning in every session.

🏆 Enrichment and Competitive Sport

As proud members of the Eden Valley Sports Partnership, our pupils benefit from a busy calendar of inter-school competitions and festivals. These events promote teamwork, perseverance, and fair play, and give pupils opportunities to represent Tebay Primary in sports such as athletics, football, netball, and more.

We also offer a range of extracurricular sports clubs and activities to encourage participation and enjoyment beyond the classroom.

🎯 Impact: What Our Pupils Gain

By the end of each key stage, our pupils will:

  • Enjoy being physically active and understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
  • Develop competence and confidence in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, leadership, and respect for others.
  • Be motivated to participate and compete fairly in sport, both in and out of school.

🐣 P.E. in the Early Years (EYFS)

In EYFS, Physical Education is delivered through the Physical Development area of the curriculum. Using elements of the Cambridgeshire Early Years framework, children develop coordination, balance, and control through play, movement, and outdoor exploration — establishing the foundation for lifelong physical confidence and enjoyment.

Our PE curriculum is inclusive and ensures that pupils of all abilities access the range of activities we offer and that they are physically active for sustained periods of time in order to encourage them to lead healthy, active lives. There are opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles in which they can build character and embed values such as fairness and respect.
