💬 PSHE Curriculum at Tebay Primary School
At Tebay Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is at the heart of developing confident, kind, and resilient young people. We use the Kapow Primary PSHE scheme, which provides a spiral, progressive curriculum designed to support children’s personal, social, emotional, and health development from EYFS to the end of Key Stage 2.
📚 Our Curriculum Structure
PSHE is taught across the following key stages:
- Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
- Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
- Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)
The curriculum builds upon prior learning each year and ensures full coverage of statutory Relationships and Health Education, as well as key elements of Citizenship and Economic Wellbeing.
🧠 Implementation: How We Teach PSHE
Our PSHE lessons follow a safe, structured, and inclusive format:
- 💭 Connect & Recall – Revisiting previous learning to support reflection and understanding.
- 💬 Explore & Discuss – Introducing new themes through stories, scenarios, and class discussions.
- 🧠 Learn & Apply – Developing understanding through activities that build empathy, teamwork, and critical thinking.
- ✍️ Reflect & Record – Children express their thoughts through writing, drawing, or discussion.
- ✅ Knowledge Stamp – Consolidating key messages and personal reflections.
🎯 Impact: What Our Pupils Gain
By the end of each key stage, pupils will:
- Understand how to stay safe, healthy, and make positive relationships.
- Recognise their own feelings and show empathy towards others.
- Be resilient, responsible, and respectful members of their community.
- Be equipped with life skills to make informed choices and contribute positively to society.
🐣 PSHE in the Early Years (EYFS)
In EYFS, PSHE is developed through the Personal, Social and Emotional Development area of the EYFS Framework, supported by the Kapow EYFS PSHE scheme. Children learn to form positive relationships, manage their feelings, and develop confidence, laying strong foundations for life-long wellbeing and learning.
We aim to give our pupils the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century. The curriculum covers key areas which will support children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships, and financial matters and will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society.
The scheme of work covers the Relationships and Health Education. statutory guidance (as set out by the Department for Education), including the non-statutory sex education.
Our curriculum also covers wider PSHE learning, in line with the requirement of the National Curriculum making provision for personal social health and economic education. Children’s learning significantly contributes to their personal development as set out in the Ofsted inspection framework and promotes the four fundamental British values which reflect life modern Britain; democracy, rule of law, respect and tolerance, and individual liberty.
