🎨 Art & Design Curriculum at Tebay Primary School

At Tebay Primary School, we are passionate about nurturing every child’s creativity and imagination through a rich and inspiring Art & Design curriculum. Using the Kapow Primary scheme, our curriculum provides a carefully sequenced learning journey that enables all pupils to explore, experiment, and express themselves confidently through a range of artistic techniques and media.

📚 Our Curriculum Structure

Our Art & Design curriculum is organised across the key stages, ensuring progression and full coverage of the National Curriculum:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
  • Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)

Each key stage builds upon previous learning so that children develop a deep understanding of artistic skills, techniques, and appreciation over time.

🧠 Implementation: How We Teach Art & Design

Lessons follow a creative and consistent structure:

  1. 🎨 Inspire & Explore – Pupils are introduced to artists, styles, and cultures to stimulate creativity.
  2. ✏️ Skill Development – Core skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media are explicitly taught.
  3. 🧩 Create & Apply – Pupils design and produce their own artwork, applying techniques independently.
  4. 🗣️ Reflect & Evaluate – Children use key vocabulary to critique their work and the work of others.
  5. Knowledge Stamp – Each session ends with a brief reflection to consolidate understanding.

🎯 Impact: What Our Pupils Gain

By the end of each key stage, our pupils will:

  • Develop confidence in artistic expression.
  • Understand and apply a range of artistic techniques.
  • Appreciate art from different times and cultures.
  • Be able to discuss and evaluate art with growing confidence.

🐣 Art & Design in the Early Years (EYFS)

In EYFS, children explore colour, texture, and form through Expressive Arts and Design, following the Kapow EYFS framework. Through creative play, they develop fine motor control and curiosity, laying foundations for Key Stage 1.
